Red Onion Sauce for Hot Dogs June 9, 2010

Posted by graciegrapes in Food.

Last month the boyfriend and I went to New York, and we finally found Papaya King.  Of course we got hot dogs and the papaya drink.  Neither of us had ever had a “New York” hot dog, and when ordering our hot dogs with onions we had in mind the image of plain diced onions.
When we got our hot dogs they weren’t topped with the diced onions that we were used to; instead they were topped with a red onion “sauce”.  The sauce was delicious!  The perfect slightly sweet, tangy topping for the hot dogs.
The other day I suddenly had a craving for a hot dog with the sauce, and since heading up to New York isn’t really an option I started looking for a recipe.
The first recipe I found was for Sabrett’s onion sauce.  It seemed too complex for me… Aside from laziness, I wanted something simple, since the sauce just tasted very simple. After some more research I figured out a basis for the sauce.

Turn regular onions into something AMAZING!

For a simple red onion sauce…

Red Onion Sauce for Hot Dogs

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon hot sauce (cayenne)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Heat oil in a medium sauce pan over medium heat.  Add onions and cook until soft; took about 5-7 minutes.

Soft; not quite caramelized, slightly translucent

Add the cinnamon and chili powder, stir for about a minute.  Next add the ketchup, water, hot sauce, salt, and black pepper.  Simmer until sauce begins to thicken.

If you keep your heat at medium it only takes about 5 minutes or so.  Allow to cool to about room temperature and serve over your hot dogs.

This sauce brought me back to New York!
